There is a possibility that I may relocate to the Detroit area. I'd be working in the city and need some insight of different areas to live that are family and commute friendly. Good schools are a priority as well as community activities geared to younger kids (I have a 3 and 7 year old).
Everyone is telling me Grosse Pointe area and although it looks nice it doesn't seem very diverse or inviting as far as family goes. I like the idea of Ann Arbor, but wonder if it is too far out. Any insight you guys might have on inbetween areas would be helpful.

Ferndale is nice, but the schools are not the best.
See my response to you on "Michigan Friends" for my thoughts on your question.

Re: Relocation/Family/Commute
Mon, June 11, 2007 - 10:32 AMGrosse Pointe is definitely diversity challenged, but family-wise it is pretty good. It has great public schools, parks, libraries and police and fire protection. The commute is very tolerable. I'd consider Royal Oak and all of the communities out the Woodward corridor as well. The Ann Arbor area would be my no. 1, too, but it would be a long painful commute to Detroit. I'm sure many do it, though.

Re: Relocation/Family/Commute
Tue, June 12, 2007 - 1:16 PMMy kids are in the GP schools, and I love them. Diversity is not as bad as some would think, especially in Grosse Pointe Woods. The commute is reasonable, most days I can make it downtown in 30 minutes or so. Commutes from areas like Bloomfield and Farmington will be significantly longer. I also find that traffic in general is lighter on the east side then it is in areas like Bloomfield or Royal Oak. Lots of homes are for sale now and pricing is reasonable. -

Mon, July 2, 2007 - 11:12 PMHi there don't live there anymore, but as nice as Ann Arbor is it's a long ride downtown and back.
I still have many family and friends who like the East side. But if you want diversiity i would
stay in the Grosse Point Woods area.. Best of luck to you and your family D -

Re: Relocation/Family/Commute
Tue, July 3, 2007 - 6:38 AMAnn Arbor is a nice place to live but the comute is enough to make anyone pull their hair out, I did it for a year or so and would never live over an hour outside of work again.
If you're only semi familiar with the area you should know that Grosse Point is pretty expensive. The majority of it is very high end but if you're set on GP I'm sure you could find a roof for cheap.
I live in Ferndale right now and can get to downtown Detroit in 15 minutes flat. Plus they've just finished repairing 75 wich is making it an easier drive now. If you don't mind crusing through the hood you to can get there in 10 :)
There's lots to do in Ferndale/R.O. and the Royal Oak schools are actually fantastic and just a mile west of Royal Oak you have Berkley which has very affordable housing and was once rated in the top 5 school districts in the country not too long ago. Berkley has been the same city for 30 years, very stable. Ferndale housing is hot right now despite the crap market.
In my opinion anywhere outside Detroit is just fine for family, despite what the television would lead you to believe. No one's getting robbed, no ones getting car jacked, no one's getting brutally murdered while leaving the grocery store. Wherever you choose, it will probably be a good choice.
